With an increased focus and need to reduce Canada’s GHG emissions, identifying and implementing viable options for shifting to zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) and low-emission vehicles (LEV) in the forest industry have been of increasing interest. As other industries and consumer markets move towards electrification at a fast pace, FPInnovations has been investigating the state of ZEV and LEV technologies as well as their readiness level within the forest industry value chain.
FPInnovations’ PIT Group – an independent testing agency for truck fleets – has been recently exploring the potential and capacity of electric yard trucks that are new to the market, specifically, Lonestar’s S22 Electric Terminal Tractor at Cascades Transport’s premises.
FPInnovations, in collaboration with Cascades and Lonestar SV, undertook to test this new all-electric yard truck to determine the feasibility of implementing these vehicles in Canadian businesses and cold weather conditions.
The two months demonstration is part of a larger project that will be studying the e-yard truck’s safety, reliability, performance, and autonomy. The e-yard truck will be evaluated under several weather conditions as well as in comparison to conventional trucks. The demonstration will also evaluate the driver satisfaction, the return-on-investment, as well as the total cost of ownership of the technology.
