Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Certification
Canadian companies have until June 12, 2021 to comply with Transport Canada’s regulation with regards to ELD certification.
Effective June 12, 2021, Transport Canada’s Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations requires that all federally-regulated motor carriers be certified to ensure that each commercial vehicle in operation is equipped with a compliant ELD. To comply with this regulation, ELDs must be verified and certified by a third-party certification body accredited with the ISO/IEC 17065 standard.
As an accredited Certification Body for ELDs, FPInnovations holds the ISO/IEC 17065 accreditation required by Transport Canada to test and certify electronic logging devices.
What is an ELD?
An ELD is a device or technology that automatically records a driver’s driving time in order to better track, manage, share and improve accuracy and efficiency in recording the driver’s record of duty status. In Canada, an ELD must be compliant with the Technical Standard for Electronic Logging Devices, published by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators and must be certified by an accredited Certification Body.
The regulations guiding the certification of ELDs are provided in Regulations Amending the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations (Electronic Logging Devices and Other Amendments): SOR/2019-165, published by Transport Canada on June 12, 2019, under section 79.1.
