Approval of a 9-axle B-train log-truck in Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has now approved the use of a 72.5t 9-axle B-train log truck configuration for use in the province of Ontario. This new configuration is deployed on over 1200 km of public roads in the province by all companies in the province.

This is the result of a collaborative effort between FPInnovations, Domtar, and the MTO over the course of many years to develop a new transportation solution that would increase transportation efficiency, and operational resilience; while ensuring interprovincial competitiveness and decreasing fuel consumption, GHG emissions, and impact on infrastructure. FPInnovations conducted significant research in many areas, including vehicle dynamics, roads impact assessments, and bridge analysis to ensure that this new configuration was safe and sustainable.

Domtar currently operates five 9axle trucks, which deliver a 10ton payload increase compared to standard 7axle quad trailers configuration. FPInnovations would like to thank Domtar, their contractors, and the MTO for all of their efforts to make this initiative successful.
