Fleet Efficiency Assessments

FPInnovations-PIT Group has been performing fleet efficiency assessments for more than 15 years for the freight transportation industry across Canada. Since 2008, the PIT Group has conducted more than 350 track tests of various products and operational practices with the aim of measuring the impact on fuel consumption. It is on this solid basis of indisputable results and expertise that the experts of the PIT Group evaluate the potential and make best practices and technology recommendations through fleet assessments.

What is the Green Freight Program?

Natural Resources Canada offers the Green Freight Program to help fleets reduce their fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. With this program, a third-party fleet energy assessment can be subsidized, in which 50% of the cost may be covered by the Green Freight Program. For more details on this program:  Green Freight Program (canada.ca)

How do we conduct an assessment?

The goals of the fleet energy assessments are to:

  • Develop recommendations (technologies and operating practices) to improve the energy efficiency of the fleet.
  • Demonstrate the return on investment of the recommended technologies and operating practices.
  • Provide knowledge that allows the fleet to implement a plan to immediately achieve the fleet energy improvements.
  • Meet the requirements of NRCan’s Green Freight Program fleet energy assessment.

The PIT Group team analyzes several aspects of the fleet operations including telematics data, vehicle specifications and purchases, maintenance, driver behavior and logistics. In addition, on-site visits are conducted to view the fleet facilities and to discuss specific operational aspects and needs of the fleet and equipment.

At the end of the audit, specific recommendations are presented that respond to the fleet’s needs. Clear scenarios involving the proposed technologies are reviewed and projections presented to evaluate the achievable GHG reductions and return on investment of the implementation of proposed technologies. The PIT Group team also reports and discusses other relevant fleet operations information that has been identified through the process.

What are the fleet’s responsibilities in the fleet efficiency assessment process?

Before the assessment begins, the PIT Group provides clear guidance on how the audit will proceed, this includes:

  • – The fleet prepares and provides the required documents and information regarding the current fleet of vehicles. This includes a detailed list of included vehicles and 12 months of usage data such as mileage, fuel consumption, idling time, number of vehicles, age of vehicles, amongst other details.
  • – The fleet hosts a two-day (in-person) visit where the PIT Group meets and discusses the fleet efficiency goals, limitations, daily operations, management practices and much more.

SCHEDULE AND DELIVERABLE

The average time needed to complete the fleet efficiency assessment is eight weeks. This includes the time from the initial project launch meeting to delivery of the final recommendations and report.

The assessment process concludes with the delivery of a written report and meeting with the PIT Group team to review the results. The report describes the current performance status of the fleet and presents recommendations to improve fleet efficiency and to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions through a detailed economic and operational evaluation.

The final report can then be submitted as the fleet energy assessment of NRCan’s Green Freight Program to provide for eligibility of technology grants.
