New technical data sheets on wood construction

FPInnovations has been mandated by Québec’s Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts (MRNF), in collaboration with the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) as part of the 2021-2026 Implementation plan for the Policy for the integration of wood in construction (Plan de mise en œuvre 2021-2026 de la Politique d’intégration du bois dans la construction), to develop technical data sheets on wood construction requiring specific skills and knowledge. This mandate, funded by the Québec government as part of the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy, aims to promote the use of low-carbon footprint building materials in construction.

The technical data sheets developed as part of this project are intended to help professionals prepare a request for an equivalent or different measure on a project, when needed, or to assist professionals with their wood construction project. The building systems targeted by these data sheets are mass timber construction, which is emerging in Québec, and wood-frame construction.

The data sheets in PDF format (French versions only) are available for free for consultation:

Masonry cladding attached to a wood-frame building

Masonry cladding has long been a dominant building material and cladding system in the construction industry. This type of cladding is commonly used on residential and non-residential buildings. All masonry cladding must be installed in accordance with the Design of masonry structures standard (CSA S304), the Connectors for masonry standard (CSA A370), and the Masonry construction for buildings standard (CSA A371).

The purpose of this technical data sheet is to detail the steps to be taken to properly design fasteners, support,s and expansion joints for masonry and brick facings.

Noise control for wood-frame construction

This document is written for construction professionals who wish to get familiar with noise control in wood-frame buildings.

This best practice sheet presents 1) essential elements for ensuring noise control in wood-frame (light frame) buildings; 2) examples of cost-effective design for wood-frame wall and floor assemblies that meet the requirements of the Code de construction du Québec, Chapitre I – Bâtiment, and that National building code of Canada 2015 (amended) (Code), and that of the majority of occupants; and 3) tips for achieving design objectives that meet occupants’ expectations for building sound insulation.

Noise control for mass timber construction

The building solutions and best practices presented in this document aim for simplicity of implementation. The fact sheet presents results and innovative solutions developed by FPInnovations and other institutes for cost-effective noise control in mass timber buildings.

Exterior cladding on orthogonal double lathing

Exterior wall construction has evolved over the years, in accordance with architectural needs and new products available on the market. Among these architectural trends, vertical cladding is gaining in popularity. This data sheet highlights the essential features needed to support the creation of an equivalent measure (alternative solution) for use of orthogonal double lathing behind the exterior cladding, creating an air space greater than 25 mm.

Firewalls in encapsulated mass timber construction

This data sheet highlights the essential features required to support the development of an equivalent measure (alternative solution) to build firewalls in encapsulated mass timber construction.

FPInnovations wishes to thank the ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts (MRNF), the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ), as well as Cecobois for their contribution in the preparation of those technical data sheets.
